The headline figure is actually encouraging: after years of increases, reported break-and-enters in Toronto have started to fall. The Toronto Police Service recorded roughly 6,000 break-and-enter incidents in 2025 — about 17 a day — down more than 11% from the year before, and the lowest annual total in several years.
But the picture across the wider GTA is more mixed, and the type of crime has shifted:
- Peel Regional Police logged 2,852 break-and-enters in 2024 across Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon.
- In York Region, reported home invasions have risen roughly 116% since 2021 — a small base, but a sharp trend that has rattled communities from Vaughan to Aurora.
- Police across Toronto, Peel, Durham, and Halton have all reported a rise in residential break-ins involving weapons, often carried out by organized, mobile groups.
